Vallejo police have arrested a man in connection with a June 20 homicide.
Detectives identified 56-year-old Vallejo resident Erick Laton Stewart Sr. as a suspect in the fatal shooting in Vallejo’s Crest neighborhood, according to a department press release. The Solano County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 65-year-old Vallejo resident George Lee.
Police said patrol officers spotted Stewart on the 1600 block of Fairgrounds Drive on July 7, and when officers contacted him, he allegedly attempted to flee. Officers arrested Stewart on an outstanding felony probation violation warrant. Officers also discovered a loaded, unregistered firearm along his flight path, which they collected as evidence, according to police.
Vallejo police spokesperson Sgt. Rashad Hollis did not respond to a request for comment.
Stewart was booked into Solano County Jail on Monday for the parole violation, according to jail records. On Wednesday, the Solano County District Attorney’s Office charged Stewart with murder and felony firearm possession, according to police. He is currently being held without bail and is represented by the Solano County Public Defender’s Office, according to public records and Solano County Public Defender Elena D’Augustino.
“Violent crime will never be acceptable in Vallejo,” Hollis said in a recorded statement posted to the department’s social media accounts. “The Vallejo Police Department remains committed to seeking justice and taking violent criminals off of our streets.”
