Vallejo police are investigating the city’s 24th homicide of 2024 after a shooting left one dead in the early morning hours on Christmas Eve.
Police responded in just over one minute to a reported shooting at 228 Broadway Street shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 24. Inside, they found a man with at least one gunshot wound. The victim died minutes later, according to dispatch audio. The suspected shooter left before police arrived, and they have made no arrests, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Rashad Hollis.
An Open Vallejo investigation published last year found that even as emergency response times for most types of crime have soared since 2019, Vallejo police still respond swiftly to many of the most serious incidents.
The Dec. 24 shooting marks a grim milestone for the city, officially surpassing last year’s homicide count of 23. A fatal shooting on New Year’s Eve brought the total killed to 25, making 2024 Vallejo’s deadliest year since 2020.
In July, the driver of an allegedly stolen SUV died after he crashed into 228 Broadway following a police chase — the second fatal pursuit in just two days. Fatal traffic collisions are not typically included in the city’s annual homicide count, according to Vallejo police spokesperson Sgt. Rashad Hollis.
