Police discovered the burned body of an unidentified person at a small homeless encampment behind a Vallejo secondhand store Friday.

Multiple Vallejo detectives, marked units, and crime scene investigator Stephanie Dailey responded to the scene behind the Eco Thrift store at 490 Redwood Street. They were later joined by officials from the Solano County Coroner’s Office, which has yet to identify the decedent. The investigators left the area around 2:00 p.m.

In an interview Friday, Vallejo police spokesperson Sgt. Rashad Hollis said the department is investigating a “suspicious death,” but declined to elaborate.

An encampment constructed from tarps, fencing, and scrap materials stretches along a dirt path under a bright blue sky. Debris and vegetation are scattered throughout the area, including an overturned scooter and abandoned appliances.

The incident caps a deadly week in Vallejo. On Monday, a gunman fatally shot two people and wounded another near the White Slough encampment near Sacramento Street and Daniels Avenue, roughly 1,000 feet from Friday’s crime scene. Police took one person into custody on multiple outstanding warrants following the shooting, prompting confusion about whether the shooter had been apprehended.

On Friday, Hollis clarified that the person responsible for Monday’s shooting is still at large.

After questioning the person taken into custody Monday, officers determined that the outstanding warrants provided “the only reason” for their arrest, Hollis said.

“That was a completely separate incident,” Hollis told Open Vallejo.

As police were investigating Monday’s shooting, a group of people committed a takeover-style robbery of a dispensary in the 1600 block of Lewis Brown Drive, according to police incident logs and dispatch audio. Hollis said no arrests have been made in that case.
