Open Vallejo is pleased to welcome Sarah Hopkins as the publication’s new investigative reporter.
Prior to joining Open Vallejo, Sarah was a reporting fellow at Inside Climate News, where she wrote feature stories on environmental justice. She previously helped produce longform investigative documentaries at FRONTLINE. Before coming to journalism, Sarah spent more than a decade in the public interest legal field, serving as an investigator, writer, and editor, including at the ACLU of Northern California.
Inspired by the intersections between science, law, and public policy, Sarah holds a master’s degree in science journalism from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was the recipient of the Taylor/Blakeslee University Fellowship and the S. Klein Prize for Scientific Writing for the Public. Prior to MIT, Sarah earned a master’s degree in Literary Studies, with Distinction, from Oxford University, and her bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College. She is a proud graduate of California public schools.
Raised in a bilingual family in Southern California, Sarah is fluent in Spanish. She joins Open Vallejo with the support of Report for America, a national service program that places journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities.
Sarah can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone, Signal or WhatsApp at (707) 561-2108. She starts on May 26.
